extricated ourselves from them察 and escaped all safe into the garrison察

except one that was wounded察through a heavy fire from their army。 They

immediately attacked us on every side察and a constant heavy fire ensued

between us day and night for the space of nine days。

In this time the enemy began to undermine our fort察 which was

situated sixty yards from Kentucke river。 They began at the water´ mark

and proceeded in the bank some distance察which we understood by their

making the water muddy with the clay察and we immediately proceeded to

disappoint their design察 by cutting a trench across their subterranean

passage。 The enemy discovering our counter´mine察by the clay we threw

out of the fort察 desisted from that stratagem此And experience now fully

convincing them that neither their power nor policy could effect their

purpose察 on the twentieth day of August they raised the siege察 and

departed。

During this dreadful siege察which threatened death in every form察we

had two men killed察 and four wounded察 besides a number of cattle。 We

killed of the enemy thirty´seven察and wounded a great number。 After they

were gone察we picked up one hundred and twenty´ five pounds weight of

bullets察 besides what stuck in the logs of our fort察 which certainly is a

great proof of their industry。 Soon after this察I went into the settlement察and

nothing worthy of a place in this account passed in my affairs for some

time。

During my absence from Kentucke察 Col。 Bowman carried on an

expedition against the Shawanese察 at Old Chelicothe察 with one hundred

and sixty men察in July察1779。 Here they arrived undiscovered察and a battle

ensued察which lasted until ten o'clock察A。 M。 when Col。 Bowman察finding

he could not succeed at this time察retreated about thirty miles。 The Indians察

in the meantime察 collecting all their forces察 pursued and overtook him察

when a smart fight continued near two hours察not to the advantage of Col。

Bowman's party。

Col。 Harrod proposed to mount a number of horse察 and furiously to

                                              13

rush upon the savages察who at this time fought with remarkable fury。 This

desperate step had a happy effect察 broke their line of battle察 and the

savages fled on all sides。 In these two battles we had nine killed察and one

wounded。 The enemy's loss uncertain察only two scalps being taken。

On the twenty´second day of June察1780察a large party of Indians and

Canadians察 about six hundred in number察 commanded by Col。 Bird察

attacked Riddle's and Martin's stations察at the Forks of Licking River察with

six pieces of artillery。 They carried this expedition so secretly察 that the

unwary inhabitants did not discover them察until they fired upon the forts察

and察 not being prepared to oppose them察 were obliged to surrender

themselves miserable captives to barbarous savages察 who immediately

after tomahawked one man and two women察and loaded all the others with

heavy baggage察forcing them along toward their towns察able or unable to

march。 Such as were weak and faint by the way察they tomahawked。 The

tender women察and helpless children察fell victims to their cruelty。 This察and

the savage treatment they received afterwards察 is shocking to humanity察

and too barbarous to relate。

The hostile disposition of the savages察and their allies察caused General

Clark察the commandant at the Falls of the Ohio察immediately to begin an

expedition with his own regiment察 and the armed force of the country察

against Pecaway察 the principal town of the Shawanese察 on a branch of

Great Miami察which he finished with great success察took seventeen scalps察

and burnt the town to ashes察with the loss of seventeen men。

About this time I returned to Kentucke with my family察and here察to

avoid an enquiry into my conduct察the reader being before informed of my

bringing my family to Kentucke察 I am under the necessity of informing

him that察during my captivity with the Indians察my wife察who despaired of

ever seeing me again察expecting the Indians had put a period to my life察

oppressed with the distresses of the country察and bereaved of me察her only

happiness察 had察 before I returned察 transported my family and goods察 on

horses察 through the wilderness察 amidst a multitude of dangers察 to her

father's house察in North´Carolina。

Shortly after the troubles at Boonsborough察I went to them察and lived

peaceably there until this time。 The history of my going home察 and

returning with my family察 forms a series of difficulties察 an account of

which would swell a volume察 and being foreign to my purpose察 I shall

purposely omit them。

I settled my family in Boonsborough once more察and shortly after察on

the sixth day of October察1780察I went in company with my brother to the

Blue Licks察 and察 on our return home察 we were fired upon by a party of

Indians。 They shot him察and pursued me察by the scent of their dog察three

miles察 but I killed the dog察 and escaped。 The winter soon came on察 and

was very severe察which confined the Indians to their wigwams。

The severity of this Winter caused great difficulties in Kentucke。 The

enemy had destroyed most of the corn察the Summer before。 This necessary

article was scarce察and dear察and the inhabitants lived chiefly on the flesh

of buffaloes。 The circumstances of many were very lamentable此However察

being a hardy race of people察 and accustomed to difficulties and

necessities察they were wonderfully supported through all their sufferings察

until the ensuing Fall察when we received abundance from the fertile soil。

Towards Spring察we were frequently harassed by Indians察and察in May察

1782察a party assaulted Ashton's station察killed one man察and took a Negro

prisoner。 Capt。 Ashton察with twenty´five men察pursued察and overtook the

savages察and a smart fight ensued察which lasted two hours察but they being

superior in number察obliged Captain Ashton's party to retreat察with the loss

of eight killed察 and four mortally wounded察 their brave commander

himself being numbered among the dead。

The Indians continued their hostilities察and察about the tenth of August

following察two boys were taken from Major Hoy's station。 This party was

pursued by Capt。 Holder and seventeen men察who were also defeated察with

the loss of four men killed察 and one wounded。 Our affairs became more

and more alarming。 Several stations which had lately been erected in the

country were continually infested with savages察stealing their horses and

killing the men at every opportunity。 In a field察near Lexington察an Indian

shot a man察and running to scalp him察was himself shot from the fort察and

fell dead upon his enemy。

Every day we experienced recent mischiefs。 The barbarous savage

nations of Shawanese察 Cherokees察 Wyandots察 Tawas察 Delawares察 and
