several others near Detroit察united in a war against us察and assembled their
choicest warriors at old Chelicothe察 to go on the expedition察 in order to
destroy us察and entirely depopulate the country。 Their savage minds were
inflamed to mischief by two abandoned men察Captains McKee and Girty。
These led them to execute every diabolical scheme察and察on the fifteenth
day of August察commanded a party of Indians and Canadians察of about five
hundred in number察 against Briant's station察 five miles from Lexington。
Without demanding a surrender察 they furiously assaulted the garrison察
which was happily prepared to oppose them察and察after they had expended
much ammunition in vain察and killed the cattle round the fort察not being
likely to make themselves masters of this place察they raised the siege察and
departed in the morning of the third day after they came察with the loss of
about thirty killed察and the number of wounded uncertain。Of the garrison
four were killed察and three wounded。
On the eighteenth day Col。 Todd察 Col。 Trigg察 Major Harland察 and
myself察speedily collected one hundred and seventy´six men察well armed察
and pursued the savages。 They had marched beyond the Blue Licks to a
remarkable bend of the main fork of Licking River察about forty´three miles
from Lexington察 as it is particularly represented in the map察 where we
overtook them on the nineteenth day。 The savages observing us察gave way察
and we察 being ignorant of their numbers察 passed the river。 When the
enemy saw our proceedings察 having greatly the advantage of us in
situation察they formed the line of battle察represented in the map察from one
bend of Licking to the other察 about a mile from the Blue Licks。 An
exceeding fierce battle immediately began察 for about fifteen minutes察
when we察being over´powered by numbers察were obliged to retreat察with
the loss of sixty´seven men察 seven of whom were taken prisoners。 The
brave and much lamented Colonels Todd and Trigg察 Major Harland and
my second son察were among the dead。 We were informed that the Indians察
numbering their dead察 found they had four killed more than we察 and
therefore察four of the prisoners they had taken察were察by general consent察
ordered to be killed察in a most barbarous manner察by the young warriors察in
order to train them up to cruelty察and then they proceeded to their towns。
On our retreat we were met by Col。 Logan察hastening to join us察with a

number of well armed men此 This powerful assistance we unfortunately
wanted in the battle察 for察 notwithstanding the enemy's superiority of
numbers察they acknowledged that察if they had received one more fire from
us察they should undoubtedly have given way。 So valiantly did our small
party fight察 that察 to the memory of those who unfortunately fell in the
battle察 enough of honour cannot be paid。 Had Col。 Logan and his party
been with us察 it is highly probable we should have given the savages a
total defeat。
I cannot reflect upon this dreadful scene察but sorrow fills my heart。 A
zeal for the defence of their country led these heroes to the scene of action察
though with a few men to attack a powerful army of experienced warriors。
When we gave way察 they pursued us with the utmost eagerness察 and in
every quarter spread destruction。 The river was difficult to cross察 and
many were killed in the flight察some just entering the river察some in the
water察 others after crossing in ascending the cliffs。 Some escaped on
horse´back察 a few on foot察 and察 being dispersed every where察 in a few
hours察 brought the melancholy news of this unfortunate battle to
Lexington。 Many widows were now made。 The reader may guess what
sorrow filled the hearts of the inhabitants察exceeding any thing that I am
able to describe。 Being reinforced察 we returned to bury the dead察 and
found their bodies strewed every where察 cut and mangled in a dreadful
manner。 This mournful scene exhibited a horror almost unparalleled此Some
torn and eaten by wild beasts察those in the river eaten by fishes察all in such
a putrified condition察that no one could be distinguished from another。
As soon as General Clark察then at the Falls of the Ohio察who was ever
our ready friend察and merits the love and gratitude of all his country´men察
understood the circumstances of this unfortunate action察 he ordered an
expedition察 with all possible haste察 to pursue the savages察 which was so
expeditiously effected察 that we overtook them within two miles of their
towns察and probably might have obtained a great victory察had not two of
their number met us about two hundred poles before we come up。 These
returned quick as lightening to their camp with the alarming news of a
mighty army in view。 The savages fled in the utmost disorder察evacuated
their towns察 and reluctantly left their territory to our mercy。 We

immediately took possession of Old Chelicothe without opposition察being
deserted by its inhabitants。 We continued our pursuit through five towns
on the Miami rivers察 Old Chelicothe察 Pecaway察 New Chelicothe察 Will's
Towns察 and Chelicothe察 burnt them all to ashes察 entirely destroyed their
corn察and other fruits察and every where spread a scene of desolation in the
country。 In this expedition we took seven prisoners and five scalps察with
the loss of only four men察two of whom were accidentally killed by our
own army。
This campaign in some measure damped the spirits of the Indians察and
made them sensible of our superiority。 Their connections were dissolved察
their armies scattered察and a future invasion put entirely out of their power察
yet they continued to practise mischief secretly upon the inhabitants察in the
exposed parts of the country。
In October following察 a party made an excursion into that district
called the Crab Orchard察and one of them察being advanced some distance
before the others察boldly entered the house of a poor defenceless family察in
which was only a Negro man察a woman and her children察terrified with the
apprehensions of immediate death。 The savage察 perceiving their
defenceless situation察without offering violence to the family attempted to
captivate the Negro察 who察 happily proved an over´match for him察 threw
him on the ground察and察in the struggle察the mother of the children drew an
ax from a corner of the cottage察 and cut his head off察 while her little
daughter shut the door。 The savages instantly appeared察and applied their
tomahawks to the door。 An old rusty gun´barrel察without a lock察lay in a
corner察 which the mother put through a small crevice察 and the savages察
perceiving it察 fled。 In the mean time察 the alarm spread through the
neighb
